Biography: A professional opera singer who recently made the crossover into film and theatre, Mary brings deep and intense resources to making a writer's work come alive, and is dedicated to changing hearts through her work. Originally from Chicago, Mary performed regularly in the Lyric Opera of Chicago. When she was invited to participate in the Tanglewood Music Festival, the summer home of the internationally renowned Boston Symphony Orchestra, she met Phyllis Curtin who later became her voice teacher and mentor. Mary moved to Boston and earned an Artist Diploma from Boston University while Curtin was Dean of the School for the Arts. Among her many projects, Mary has performed the role of the Countess in The Sound of Music, the role of Adele in Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus, and the role of Snow White in Conrad Susa's Transformations. Her performance in Transformations so impressed Susa himself that he referred to her as the "ideal Snow White." Mary went on hiatus from vocal performance for some years due to a battle with ovarian cancer, but after surviving the cancer and its treatment, she returned to performance with renewed vigor. She decided to begin expressing herself in a more personal way through acting, and to reach a wider audience beyond classical music. The combination of a strong natural talent and many years of musical stage experience have brought her much acclaim already. In the last year, she worked on several independent films on the east coast including After Last Season, Mommy's Little Monster and Bluebeard. Bluebeard was part of the 2008 Boston International Film Festival. Recently, Mary performed in the premiere of I Am Not My Breasts, a play about breast cancer survivorship that allowed her to express artistically her own experience surviving ovarian cancer. Mary is the recipient of the Drama Award from Southern Illinois University and the Graduate Faculty Award from Boston University. |
